I am all for simplicity when it comes to newborn photography. If you are after shots of babies in elaborate set ups, hanging from trees or styled with all of the bows and the baskets, then I am not the photographer for you.
When it comes to capturing your newborn, simplicity is the key for me. I prefer minimum styling and also minimum disruption to baby for natural and simple newborn photography. I prefer neutral tones and keeping accessories at a minimum, making your baby the focus of the image, not the props.
In saying all of that, it is not to say that I don’t appreciate looking at other Photographer’s work who do all of the above in terms of elaborately styling their sessions. I have a great deal of admiration and appreciation for their work. Many of my Photographer friends do this type of newborn photography and I think they are amazing at it. However its just not me nor is it the space that I feel at home in.
For me it is all about the simple beauty of your baby and capturing those real moments that happen. I like classic and timeless images that will hopefully stand the test of time and be enjoyed generations from now. I also like capturing emotions and warm moments. Newborn photography certainly lends well to these elements.
It always fascinates me when I meet a new baby just how much of their personalities are already out there. Every baby is so different and I absolutely love getting to know them. I like being able to capture their quirks and the things that make them who they are. I try to honour every baby and every family in this way, focussing on the individualism and uniqueness of everyone I meet.
Newborn photography also requires a lot of patience to work alongside the needs of babies. Whenever necessary, we stop for feeds or cuddles. If something isn’t going to plan, we simply come up with a new one. This is all just part of the job and also an element that I enjoy.
I have always been a baby person. By that I mean, I have felt comfortable with babies and have enjoyed being around them so photographing them is a little bit like a dream job for me. I get to utilise my artistic skills as well as my baby whispering skills in every session and I get the chance to cuddle loads of newborns each week. This is wonderful for me as I am not having any more babies of my own, so I can get my baby fix during photo sessions.
The photo session that I am sharing here is this lovely couple’s first child.
Most of my clients come to me for sessions as they feel a connection to my simple and natural style and they usually all say that they love black and white images too. So every client receives a mixture of simply styled images both in colour and black and white.
This gorgeous little one gave us smiles and cheeky looks and decided to have a conversation with her Dad also. As always, it was very special for me to capture these moments for my clients and for them to receive their beautiful images.
If you are expecting a baby, Carmen is always happy for you to visit her studio and have a consultation about a photoshoot. This meeting is free of charge without any obligation to book in a session. N.B. Newborn sessions are best booked in when you are still pregnant as session times are limited.
